Here is something nobody mentions when they're breathlessly recommending a trip to the Catskills to walk in Baby and Johnny's footsteps. Dirty Dancing was not filmed in the Catskills. Not a single frame of it. The whole thing was shot in Virginia and North Carolina, which are approximately 500 miles from the Catskills and not remotely the same place.

The fictional Kellerman's Mountain House was inspired by Grossinger's Catskill Resort in Liberty, New York โ€” a once-legendary Borscht Belt hotel that closed in 1986, the year before the film was even released, and burned to the ground in 2022. So if you were planning to book a room there, you have missed your window by about four decades and also the building no longer exists.

The good news is that where the film was actually shot is not only still standing but actively welcoming Dirty Dancing fans with open arms, themed weekends, guided tours and dance lessons. And it is considerably more beautiful than a derelict resort in upstate New York.

Mountain Lake Lodge, Pembroke, Virginia

The main filming location for Dirty Dancing is Mountain Lake Lodge in Pembroke, Virginia, tucked into the Blue Ridge Mountains about five hours southwest of Washington DC. This is where Kellerman's Mountain House came to life on screen โ€” the main lodge, the gazebo where Baby's father delivered his famous look of profound disappointment, the restaurant where Johnny and Baby first laid eyes on each other, and Baby's Cabin are all here and recognisable to anyone who has seen the film more than twice. Which is most people.

Filming began here on September 5 1986, with the movie originally titled simply "Dancing." Patrick Swayze and Jennifer Grey both stayed at the lodge throughout production, along with Jerry Orbach, Kelly Bishop and the rest of the cast. In October 1986, Swayze and Grey had to take breaks every five to ten minutes during the famous lake lift sequence because the water was so cold. This is the kind of detail that makes you feel slightly better about your own life choices.

The lake situation: A geological anomaly has caused Mountain Lake itself to fluctuate dramatically over the decades, and today it is often little more than a dry bed. If you were hoping to recreate the lift in the exact spot, you may find yourself doing so on dry land. The lodge is upfront about this. The surrounding 2,600-acre nature preserve and bird sanctuary, however, is spectacular regardless of the water levels.

The lodge runs Dirty Dancing themed weekends throughout the year, featuring film tours, dance instruction, parties, lawn games, scavenger hunts and screenings of the film. These weekends sell out quickly, so booking well in advance is not a suggestion but a necessity. Even without a themed weekend, you can walk the filming locations, visit Baby's Cabin and The Gazebo, and eat in the Harvest Restaurant and Patio where the fictional Johnny and Baby had their first charged interaction.

Lake Lure, North Carolina

The second major filming location is Lake Lure in North Carolina, which doubled as the staff quarters where Baby first encounters Johnny's world. The iconic lake scenes โ€” the lift practice, the dancing on the log, the general atmosphere of repressed early 1960s sexuality โ€” were shot here. Lake Lure is about two and a half hours from Mountain Lake Lodge, making a two-stop itinerary entirely feasible if you are committed to the pilgrimage.

The area around Lake Lure is genuinely beautiful, with the lake itself surrounded by the Hickory Nut Gorge and the Blue Ridge Mountains. It is worth the trip on its own merits, entirely independently of the fact that Patrick Swayze once danced here while wearing extremely tight trousers.

What Happened to the Real Kellerman's

Grossinger's Catskill Resort, the property that inspired the fictional Kellerman's, had a genuinely extraordinary history. It opened in 1914 and became one of the great Borscht Belt resorts, a destination for Jewish families at a time when many hotels across America operated openly discriminatory admission policies. At its peak it hosted 150,000 guests a year, had its own airport and post office, and welcomed everyone from Eddie Fisher to Nelson Rockefeller.

It closed in 1986. Various redevelopment plans came and went over the following three decades. In 2018 most of the buildings were demolished. In August 2022, three days before the film's 35th anniversary, the main house burned to the ground. The symmetry was almost too perfect. Kellerman's is gone. The place that inspired it is a car park. If you want Dirty Dancing, you go to Virginia.

Your Dirty Dancing Itinerary

  • Stay at Mountain Lake Lodge, Pembroke, Virginia โ€” the main filming location. Book themed weekends early or visit independently year-round.
  • Walk to Baby's Cabin and The Gazebo โ€” both are on the property and exactly as recognisable as you'd hope.
  • Eat at The Harvest Restaurant and Patio โ€” where Johnny and Baby first see each other in the film.
  • Drive to Lake Lure, North Carolina โ€” two and a half hours away, the location of the lake lift scenes.
  • Fly into Roanoke Regional Airport โ€” the closest major airport to Mountain Lake Lodge, about an hour's drive away.
  • Allow at least two nights at the lodge โ€” one day is not enough.

Staying at Mountain Lake Lodge Today

The lodge operates as a full resort with accommodation, dining, spa facilities and a comprehensive programme of outdoor activities including hiking, mountain biking, kayaking and zip-lining. It sits on a 2,600-acre nature preserve and bird sanctuary in the Blue Ridge Mountains, which means that even if you have no interest whatsoever in Dirty Dancing, it is an extremely good place to stay.

For fans, the experience of walking onto the grounds and recognising the main lodge from the opening sequences of the film is, by most accounts, genuinely affecting. The property knows its history and leans into it warmly without making the whole thing feel like a theme park. Baby's Cabin is there. The Gazebo is there. The path where Johnny tells Baby she looks wonderful when she's angry is there. The lake is not always there, but two out of three is respectable.

Getting There

โœˆ๏ธ Getting there

Mountain Lake Lodge is in Pembroke, Virginia, off I-460 west of Roanoke. The closest major airport is Roanoke-Blacksburg Regional Airport, approximately one hour's drive away. From the east coast, it is also driveable from Washington DC (around five hours), Charlotte (three hours) and Raleigh (four hours).

Nobody puts Baby in a corner. And nobody should put this trip in the too-difficult pile. It is a beautiful resort in a spectacular location that happens to also be where one of the most beloved films of the 1980s was made. The combination is hard to argue with.
